Iceland :: Part 3

This post tells more of the unfortunate times.

Reynisfjara
It's the famous black sand beach of Iceland. It was very rainy while we were there but we returned on our way back that direction and caught it in the sun. Admittedly, it was more beautiful and peaceful and less crowded while in the rain so I'm glad we were able to see the beauties in the storms.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Misty which made for some cool photos.

Jökulsárlón
This is the only place that I requested we go and it was on the tail end of our journey so it was definitely a few hours simply dedicated to see it. And. it. was. so. foggy. Like, we were able to see the icebergs for about 15 minutes before the fog completed enveloped everything. Mind you, the icebergs were only maybe 20 yards from the shore! It was actually a pretty big bummer for me.

Skaftafell
This waterfall is known for the columnar rocks. Thank goodness for our ponchos because it poured on this hike.

The Moss Fields
This was one of the coolest out of this world places. Imagine 6 inches of moss on top of an entire field of volcanic rock. All I kept thinking about is how we should have pitched our tent there the night previous. It would have been so plush! Like memory foam! We also did a mini photoshoot here because it was beautiful and we were celebrating our 1 year anniversary.

Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss
This were just around the corner from each other. Skogafoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls and Seljalandsfoss is one that you can walk behind.

This is a hot spring we went to. Scratch that. This is a lukewarm-at-best spring that we went to. Liz and I were the only ones brave enough to swim and it was just as we expected. Very cold. We kept our beanies on.

At a gas station, Dusty was accidentally filled with gasoline instead of diesel. We had to sleep in the car that night as we waited for someone to come pump our tank. This was early early in the morning as the sun was rising. I took a photo because it was some of the only blue sky we saw while there so it was a photo of hope for a day of nice weather after a sleepless night of gas station hot dogs and curling up in a bucket seat.

This was a little hostel of sorts that we stayed at. Imagine a 10'x10' box with two bunk beds, a sink, and pitch black. Thanks to those blinds we all slept in until about 10am. We sang praises to those blinds. Bless those blinds.

And that's it! Iceland was absolutely beautiful with its countless waterfalls, budding lupins, and horses and sheep. Out of all the places we've visited, we can agree that we would go back to Iceland. Especially for the Vínarbrauð :)

Iceland :: Part 2

Most of our Iceland plans ran smoothly and gave us some random pleasant surprises. This post is comprised of some of these pleasantries.

Oxararfoss
This was a waterfall in the middle of Pingvellir National park. To get to it, we walked through Almannagjá Canyon that had a lot of history in it. It is were the Vikings would hold their Parliament sessions and then later it was used as a public display to hang and drown criminals. It was equally gorgeous and haunted.

Bruarfoss
This was not a waterfall flowing of water...
it was definitely the source of Powerade's Mountain Berry Blast drink.
It is unbelievably blue.

Gullfoss
Gullfoss was straight up impressive. It wasn't necessarily beautiful like Glymur falls but it was powerful and magnificent in its power. It is difficult to describe as it took us a while to figure out our own emotions while we were there. The other thing we spent the majority of our time here discussing was which side of the waterfall we would rather fall down if we were caught in it. We came to no conclusion. My vote was for the right side.

Haìfoss
Haifoss was a waterfall that was on our list but later neglected. Then Chris and Liz as pilot and co-pilot at the time decided we had time to hit it. For the majority of our time we were the only ones there and we ate it up. The 11pm sunset golden (3) hour(s) lit up the mist and the mossy rocks and Haifoss became a magical surprise.

Dusty. What a rockstar.
